What is Degenerative Disc Disease?

Degenerative Disc Disease is a condition caused by the gradual deterioration of discs in your vertebrae. Some deterioration is a natural part of the aging process and doesn’t always result in pain or other symptoms. Instead many patients just lose some flexibility in the vertebrae as the discs change over time. However, when painful symptoms are present, it’s important to seek treatment.

What Causes this Condition?

The discs in the spine are composed of a strong outer wall and a soft interior core. Throughout the aging process, these discs go through many changes, growing dryer and flatter over time. Unfortunately, flatter discs are less effective at absorbing shocks in the spine. And since those discs lose water as you age, you ultimately have less protection between those vertebrae.

As the degenerative process occurs, everyday stresses on the spine can damage the outer walls of those discs, exposing underlying nerves. That can lead to pressure on the nerves that results in pain that can quickly become chronic if untreated. Over time, those discs can even become herniated, causing even more pain and potential disability.

Note also that certain genetic conditions, trauma, and lifestyle issues can increase the risk of early onset disc degeneration and may increase the severity of symptoms.

What are the Symptoms of Degenerative Disc Disease?

Degenerative Disc Disease is not always accompanied by obvious symptoms. Even in instances where you experience back pain, there may be no other clear signs of the condition. However, the following symptoms may be present:

  • Recurring pain that only lasts for days or several weeks at a time
  • Pain in the lower back, upper thighs, or buttocks
  • Heightened pain when you bend, sit, lit, or twist your body
  • Pain that abates when you are in motion or when you change your body position
  • Tingling in the extremities or weakness in the leg muscles

Obviously, these symptoms are also present in many other back conditions, so they may not indicate degenerative disc problems. However, if you are experiencing one or more of these signs, it is important to seek professional care as soon as possible.

What Treatment Options are Available?

Treatment options can include self-care, medical device support, surgery, physical therapy, or osteopathic care. For obvious reasons, we recommend the least invasive non-surgical options for all but the most severe cases of Degenerative Disc Disease. For most patients, surgery should be the treatment of last resort.
