Carpal Tunnel Treatment in New York City

Treatment for carpal tunnel includes osteopathic manipulation and therapies that reduce pressure on the median nerve, providing relief from lower arm and hand pain, numbness, and weakness.

What is Carpal Tunnel?

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition in which pressure occurs on the median nerve within the narrow passageway of the wrist. Since the median nerve is responsible for providing sensation to areas of the hand, and provides signals that help with hand motor function, this common condition cause pain, weakness, and loss of function.

Carpal tunnel can be treated, but it is important to seek help as early as possible. Most patients find that untreated elbow, hand and wrist conditions like carpal tunnel tend to worsen over time. In some cases, ignoring the problem can eventually lead to permanent nerve damage that may require surgical intervention. Fortunately, osteopathic care is a proven and effective option for early treatment of carpal tunnel and its accompanying symptoms.

What Causes this Condition?

Carpal tunnel occurs due to abnormal narrowing in the tunnel, often caused by tissue swelling that places pressure on the median nerve. When those tissues swell, they gradually apply more and more pressure to the nerve, which causes pain and disrupts normal function. Common causes for this condition can include:

  • Repetitive movements with the hands that aggravate the wrist tendons. This is a common concern for many sedentary jobs, as well as certain sporting activities and manual labor occupations.
  • Prolonged hand and wrist extension or flexion.
  • Hormonal imbalances and changes, such as those experienced during pregnancy.
  • Medical conditions like arthritis, thyroid imbalances, and diabetes.
  • Research has found that the condition can run in families, due to shared anatomical traits like a naturally smaller carpal tunnel.

What Are the Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

The symptoms of carpal tunnel usually begin with mild discomfort but can progress in severity over time. Those symptoms can include:

  • Tingling or numbness in the thumb and the first three fingers of the hand.
  • Painful sensations in the thumb and first three fingers of the hand.
  • Weakness that can impact grip, manual dexterity, and the ability to grasp objects without dropping them.
  • Pain and tingling sensations that radiate from the forearm up to the shoulder.
  • Heightened pain at night that may cause restless sleep.
  • Daytime symptoms may be mild, with pain and weakness flaring up when your hands are holding objects, or your wrists are bent.

Because symptoms can be progressive unless treated, it is important to seek medical assistance if you suspect that you are suffering from this condition.
