Golfer’s elbow is treated with osteopathic techniques that focus on alleviating inflammation and tendon pressure to help reduce tension, tenderness, and pain in the forearm and inside elbow area.

What is Golfer’s Elbow?

Golfer’s elbow, or medial epicondylitis, is a painful condition affecting the tendons responsible for connecting the forearm to the elbow. It is similar to tennis elbow, with the exception that this condition impacts the inside of the elbow and can radiate to the forearm. Though it is associated with golfing, medial epicondylitis can also be experienced by anyone who engages in activities typified by repetitive gripping. Thus, tennis players, bowlers, weight trainers, and athletes who throw balls can also suffer from the condition.

Like many other elbow, hand and wrist conditions, this elbow ailment can often resolve itself with rest. Typically, that means refraining from the activities that caused the condition. In addition, many doctors recommend ice to help limit swelling and relieve pain. Osteopathic care can be an essential part of that recovery effort, providing a non-invasive, gentle option for reducing pain and expediting the healing process.

What Causes this Condition?

The condition is caused when tiny tears occur in the muscles and tendons responsible for controlling your hands, wrists, and fingers. Repetitious movements like throwing a ball or grasping a bat or club can cause gradual wear and tear of muscle and tendon tissue. In addition, improper technique, poor physical conditioning, and inadequate stretching and warmups can play a role. Common causes can include:

  • Occupational activities, like those seen in plumbing, construction, or various contractor jobs.
  • Sports involving throwing, like baseball, football, and similar activities.
  • Weight training, due to the excessive gripping. In addition, lifting heavy weights can place inordinate strain on the muscles and tendons in the elbow.
  • Golf, tennis, and other sports that require repeated gripping of equipment.

People who are obese, over the age of forty, or engage in repetitious activities more than two hours each day may be at heightened risk for this condition.

What Are the Symptoms of Golfer’s Elbow?

While some symptoms are shared by other elbow, wrist and hand conditions, the following signs are typical for this ailment:

  • Pain, particularly on the inner side of the elbow.
  • Hand and wrist weakness.
  • Elbow stiffness that may reduce hand function.
  • Numbness or tingling sensations that may extend to the fingers.
  • Inflammation in the elbow.
  • Loss of elbow range of motion.

Pain can either be constant or recurring and may be heightened when engaging in certain activities or arm movements. Symptoms often progress gradually but may also appear without warning.

Dr. Tafler took me in for a weekend to receive manipulation under anesthesia. Two weeks later I was able to walk without pain. I have been pain free since that moment until today, many years after initial treatment. Without his treatment I do not know if I would have been able to walk at all.
