Treatment for trochanteric bursitis can include osteopathic techniques that focus on alleviating irritation and inflammation to restore range of motion and function while reducing hip pain, soreness, and los mobility.

What is Trochanteric Bursitis?

Trochanteric Bursitis is one of the more common causes for hip pain and occurs when bursa in the hip become inflamed. Each of your hips contain two bursae – fluid-filled sacs that help to provide cushion between the body’s bones and its skin, muscles, tendons, and other soft tissue. There are two of these bursae located in each hip, one on the outside and one on the inside. This type of bursitis occurs when there is inflammation of the outside bursa.

Naturally, hip conditions of this kind can present many challenges, due to the hips’ vital role in mobility. When healthy, hips provide power and stability for a wide range of activities, including walking, running, crouching, and jumping. Bursitis can inhibit those movements and create both pain and weakness in the impacted area. Fortunately, osteopathic care can be an effective option for addressing hip conditions like bursitis.

What Causes this Condition?

Hip bursitis is most commonly caused by overuse, due to excessive walking, running, cycling, or other activities that rely on the hips. In many instances, the iliotibial band can tighten, rub against the bursa on the outside of the hip and cause inflammation. In addition to that common cause, other factors can include:

  • Hip injuries from accidents or falls
  • Tears in the muscles of the hip
  • Surgical complications
  • Imbalances in your gait, or poor hip posture
  • Certain medical conditions like gout or arthritis
  • Repetitive stress
  • Certain spinal diseases

These injuries are more common among women, middle-aged patients, and seniors.

What Are the Symptoms of Trochanteric Bursitis?

The primary symptom associated with this type of bursitis is pain at the bony part of the hip bone. Other symptoms may include:

  • Pain that extends from the point of the hip bone to the outside thigh.
  • Pain that progresses from intense, sharp sensations to dull aches that extend across much of the hip.
  • Increased discomfort at night, particularly if the patient rolls over onto the hip.
  • Strain when rising from a chair, squatting, or climbing stairs.
  • Untreated hip bursitis can lead to hip swelling, redness, and possible fever.

Because bursitis symptoms can worsen over time, early diagnosis and treatment is recommended to ensure a prompt recovery. Osteopathic care can play an important role in treating these conditions.
