Meniscus Tears Treatment in New York City

Meniscus tear treatment can include a range of osteopathic techniques designed to eliminate swelling and inflammation to promote healing, reduce pain and tenderness, and alleviate loss of mobility and function.

What are Meniscus Tears?

Meniscus tears are among the most common of knee injuries and occur when the meniscus cartilage in your knee gets torn. The menisci is a piece of cartilage located between your thighbone and shinbone. When healthy, this cartilage helps to provide a cushion between those bones, and acts like shock absorbers to prevent knee damage. When the meniscus gets torn, it results in swelling, stiffness in the knee joint, and pain. In many instances, this type of injury can be extremely debilitating.

Some of the more severe meniscus tears require surgical intervention to repair the cartilage. However, many cases can be treated with less invasive measures, like rest, medication, and cold applications. Osteopathic care can also be an effective part of any treatment strategy to help minimize pain and swelling and expedite your body’s healing processes.

What Causes this Condition?

A torn meniscus can be caused by a variety of factors, including:

  • Activities that involve sudden rotation of the knee
  • Sudden stops or turns
  • Excessive kneeling or squatting
  • Lifting heavy objects
  • Degenerative loss of cartilage in the knee, particularly in older adults

As you might guess, many of these injuries occur in sporting activities. Many athletes in contact sports or activities that involve a high rate of pivoting can experience torn menisci. These injuries are also common for people who fail to properly stretch and warm up before exercise, or whose work duties require kneeling and rising, squatting, or similar repetitive knee motions.

What Are the Symptoms of Meniscus Tears?

Common symptoms can include:

  • Swelling in the affected knee
  • An audible popping sound in the knee when the injury occurs
  • Stiffness that makes it difficult to straighten or bend the injured knee
  • Pain in the injured knee
  • Weakness in the knee
  • Reduced range of motion

Symptoms may seem mild in the immediate aftermath of the tear. In many instances, athletes can suffer these injuries and continue to play. However, as inflammation gradually sets in, the true nature of the injury becomes clear.
