What is Patellar Tendonitis?

Patellar tendonitis is an inflammation or injury in the tendon connecting the shinbone to the patella, or knee bone. This condition is a fairly common injury for athletes like volleyball and basketball players whose sports require frequent and repetitive jumping. Like many other knee injuries, however, even non-athletes can suffer from the condition.

The injury itself occurs as a result of repeated stress and pressure on the tendon. Repeated jumping or running can create tiny tearing in the tendon tissue. In most instances, the body is able to repair those micro-tears, often emerging stronger as tissue is torn down and rebuilt. Unfortunately, repeated overuse of the muscles and tendons can cause the tears to increase and multiple. When that happens, the area can become inflamed, resulting in swelling, tightness, and pain.

While many patellar tears can resolve themselves with rest and recommended treatments, osteopathic care can help to address symptoms and expedite healing.

What Causes this Condition?

As noted, this form of tendonitis is generally due to overuse of the patellar tendon. There are a variety of other causes that can contribute to the condition, including:

  • Ongoing leg tightness in the muscles of the hamstrings and quadriceps. This tightness can place increased pressure on the tendon.
  • Imbalances in the muscles of your legs. For example, weightlifters who focus on their quadriceps and neglect their hamstrings can put undue pressure on the patellar tendon.
  • The condition is most commonly seen in patients in their teens, twenties, and thirties. In addition, taller people and those who are overweight can be more prone to the injury.

What Are the Symptoms of Patellar Tendonitis?

The symptoms associated with this tendonitis can include:

  • Pain in the area between the tibia and kneecap
  • As pain progresses, it can interfere with standing, climbing stairs, and walking
  • Tenderness around the kneecap
  • Weakness in the knee, especially during exercise
  • Sharper pain when you put weight on the affected knee

Any knee pain should be diagnosed as soon as possible. Left untreated, these tendon tears can progress into larger tears that require more invasive treatment. Osteopathic care can be an important part of any early-stage treatment regimen and play a vital role in ensuring that you enjoy an expedited recovery.
