What is Manipulation Under Anesthesia?

Manipulation under anesthesia, or MUA, is a non-invasive manipulation technique used to provide relief from chronic pain and other pain symptoms. This technique is typically used in cases where more conventional pain relief strategies have failed to produce results. Osteopathic professionals can use MUA to help treat conditions involving back pain, neck and joint discomfort, muscle spasms, and many other long-term or chronic pain issues.

Unlike most manual manipulation techniques, patients are sedated during this treatment. That sedation allows the osteopath to stretch and manipulate muscle tissues, adjust bones, and align joints without the patient’s body involuntarily resisting the movements. That lack of resistance helps to ensure that the treatment can be performed with less force, and thus no pain. As a result, this manipulation technique can be an even safer alternative to standard muscle manipulation.

What Symptoms Does MUA Treat?

MUA has demonstrated effectiveness in treating a variety of pain-related symptoms, including:

  • Muscle spasms in the back and neck
  • Painful conditions that limit range of motion
  • Compressed or entrapped nerves
  • Chronic, painful disc ailments
  • Failed back surgery syndrome
  • Chronic strains and sprains
  • Pain and impaired movement due to internal scar tissue

In many instances, sedated manipulation can produce more long-lasting pain relief than other forms of manipulation. In addition, the technique is considered safer and less expensive than surgery and other invasive treatments.

How is the Treatment Performed?

First, your medical provider must determine that sedated manipulation is a viable treatment for your case. When it is, your osteopath will work with a team to perform the procedure. An anesthesiologist will administer and monitor the sedation, while the osteopath uses a variety of manipulation techniques to achieve the desired outcome. Those technique may include stretching, adjusting, and other movements to realign and mobilize the affected area of the body.

In most cases, the entire procedure takes only about 10-15 minutes, after which the patient is awakened and kept in a recovery area for further monitoring. Patients often report marked improvement in symptoms like pain after just one treatment session.
