What is Neck Pain?

Neck pain is one of the most common and serious types of pain, impacting every part of a patient’s life. It can have any one of a number of causes, including injury, poor posture, and even workplace habits. In many instances, pain in the neck can radiate to the shoulders and upper back, cause severe headaches, and diminish mobility. It can even result in pain or tingling sensations and numbness in the arms and hands in some cases.

By some estimates, as many as one in every ten people suffers from neck discomfort at any given moment. Because the neck is responsible for supporting you head, it can be one of the most vulnerable areas of your body. Fortunately, osteopathic treatment can be an effective way to obtain pain relief and restore normal range of motion.

What Causes this Condition?

Like many other musculoskeletal conditions neck discomfort can be caused by many different factors. Sometimes, the problem originates in the neck itself. At other times, the pain can be impacted by problems with the upper back, shoulders, or even the ribs. Specific causes can include:

  • Tension in the neck caused by poor posture or repetitive stress
  • Work conditions. For example, neck discomfort is commonly seen in patients who work with computers all day
  • Medical conditions like fibromyalgia and multiple sclerosis
  • Pinched nerves caused by disc injuries, arthritic bone spurs, or joint sprains that result in swelling around the nerves
  • Injuries like whiplash or stress from other physical trauma
  • In some cases, infection or degeneration of the upper spine

What Are the Symptoms of Neck Pain?

This type of pain in the neck can present a variety of symptoms. In addition to the expected pain, patients may experience loss of neck mobility and discomfort in the shoulders and upper back. Some cases result in numbness in the arms, hands, and fingers, and even tingling sensations in the upper extremities. Chronic neck pains are often accompanied by headaches caused by a stiff upper back and neck. Patients with ongoing neck problems are often fatigued as well.

Of course, many of these symptoms are similar to those experienced by patients suffering from other painful upper body conditions. A proper diagnosis is vital to ensure that you get the right treatment plan for your medical needs.

Dr. Tafler took me in for a weekend to receive manipulation under anesthesia. Two weeks later I was able to walk without pain. I have been pain free since that moment until today, many years after initial treatment. Without his treatment I do not know if I would have been able to walk at all.

I felt myself at my twenties. When I went for the second treatment under anesthesia, I was running up the stairs at my church. All my friends got very happy for me. So, I believe, this man is a hero!
