What is Shoulder Pain?

Shoulder pain can take many forms and can be caused by a variety of different factors. The pain can occur in the shoulder joint, any of the deltoid muscles, and the ligaments and tendons. It’s a common type of pain, since the shoulders are such an important part of most daily activities and can be subject to overuse and injury. While many instances of shoulder pain pass within a few days, some cases can become chronic and last for many years if they are not properly treated.

Shoulder pain can come from problems with the rotator cuff, usually due to overuse or strain. In addition, problems with the joint between the shoulder and collarbone can sometimes occur. Pain may also arise due to swelling in the area, stiffness of the tissue surrounding the shoulder joint, or loss of cartilage. Injuries like dislocation can also create this pain.

Most pain in the shoulder can resolve itself, but the healing process can take time. Osteopathic care can help to expedite that healing and more effectively manage pain and other related symptoms.

What Causes this condition?

Shoulder pain can be caused by anything from overexertion to physical injury. Common causes include:

  • Sore muscles caused by repetitious movements
  • Physical deterioration of joint cartilage in the shoulder area
  • Trauma, particularly from falls, sudden impacts, and other injuries
  • Dislocation of the shoulder joint
  • Stiffening of the tissue surrounding the shoulder joint
  • Sprains, torn cartilage, or tendon ruptures
  • Painful conditions like arthritis, bursitis, thoracic outlet syndrome, or rotator cuff injuries
  • Broken collarbone or arm

What Are the Symptoms of Shoulder Pain?

While some shoulder pain is common, chronic or severe pain may require medical attention. The following symptoms may indicate a more serious condition that requires intervention:

  • Swelling in the shoulder
  • Warmer than usual skin around the joint
  • Intense pain
  • Any apparent deformity in the joint area
  • Reduced joint range of motion

When these symptoms accompany pain in the shoulder area, you should seek professional help. In most instances, osteopathic care can provide the safe, gentle treatment you need to resolve this pain and discomfort.
