Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction Treatment in New York City

Treatment for sacroiliac joint dysfunction uses osteopathic techniques to relieve joint inflammation that can cause chronic pain in the lower back, weakness in the legs and back, and other debilitating symptoms.

What is Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction?

Dysfunction in the sacroiliac joint is estimated to be a root cause of lower back pain in between 15 and 30 percent of all cases. This joint connects the sacrum bone to the hip bones and is designed to absorb shocks between the pelvis and upper body. Along with strong ligaments and surrounding muscles, the joint absorbs pressure, provides stability, and assists with forward and backward bending of the torso.

Unfortunately, the cartilage surrounding the joints bone can get damaged or be worn away over time. That can lead to the bones rubbing against each other, adding stress to the joint and causing inflammation. When that happens, patients often experience loss of mobility, pain throughout the lower back and lower extremities.

What Causes this condition?

In addition to normal wear and tear of the joint cartilage, there are several other factors that can contribute to this dysfunction. They include:

  • Damage from any traumatic injury. That includes falls, automobile accidents, and other impacts that damage the joints.
  • Repetitive motions and stresses from weightlifting, physical labor, and sports.
  • Arthritis of the spine.
  • In addition to hormonal change impacting the area, pregnancy can add increased stress on the joints due to alterations in body weight and gait. That can result in abnormal wear and tear.

According to researchers, young women of child-bearing age may be at greater risk for this condition than other demographics.

What Are the Symptoms of Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction?

Like most back-related pain conditions, this disorder’s symptoms can be difficult to differentiate from other common syndromes. As a general rule, sacroiliac pain is typically centered in the lower back and buttock region. However, it can also be present in the groin, hips, legs and feet. Common symptoms include:

  • Pain that is aggravated by bearing more of your bodyweight on one leg.
  • Discomfort or sharp pain while standing for extended periods of time.
  • Pain when you walk with long strides.
  • Noticeable pain during stairclimbing.
  • Leg and back pain while running.
  • Stiffness and even burning sensations in the pelvis, due to inflammation.

Proper identification of these symptoms is vital, since there is no single test that can accurately diagnose this dysfunction. Proper diagnosis is dependent upon physical examination, a review of medical history, and consultation with medical professionals.
